Before the Open (Jan 3)

Good morning. Happy Thursday.
The Asian/Pacific markets closed with a lean to the downside. Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines closed up; Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, India, New Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand were weak. Europe, Africa and the Middle East are currently mixed. Russia, South Africa and Norway are up; Poland, France, Germany and the Netherlands are down. Futures in the States point towards a relatively big gap down open for the cash market.
