Before the Open (Feb 17)

Good morning. Happy Friday. Happy Options Expiration Day.
The Asian/Pacific markets closed mostly down. Japan, China and Indonesia were weakest. Europe is currently mostly down. France, Spain, Italy and Norway are down more than 1%. Germany, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Finland and Russia are also weak. Futures in the States point towards a moderate gap down open for the cash market.

The dollar is up. Oil and copper are down. Gold is up, silver down. Bonds are up.
The market’s overall trend remains rock solid, but given the gains in place, entering new positions here comes with added risk. The risk/reward isn’t what it was just a couple weeks ago.
If you’re a long term trader, stay the course – no reason to panic just because the market is due for a rest.
If you’re shorter term, manage positions wisely.
The big money has been made recently by sitting and doing nothing while the market has floated up (the Jesse Livermore quote below comes to mind.) But it’s time to play a more active role.

Long term I like the market a lot. Shorter term we need to be a little more careful.
