Before the Open (Oct 30)

Good morning. Happy Thursday.
The Asian/Pacific markets closed with a lean to the upside. India, China and Japan did well; Hong Kong dropped. Europe is currently mostly down. Greece is down more than 4%; Spain and Italy are down more than 2%; London, Germany, France, Belgium, Amsterdam and Norway are down more than 1%. Futures here in the States point towards a moderate gap down open for the cash market.

The dollar is up. Oil and copper are down. Gold and silver are down.
The market dropped a little yesterday. No big deal considering the prior day was one of the biggest up days of the year. Today the market will start in a hole, so if it wants to avoid its first back-to-back losses in three weeks, it’ll have some extra work to do.
Overall I continue to like the market. I switched my bias to “up” three Wednesday’s ago, and I’ve had no reason to change. Everything that was lost at the end of September and beginning of October has been recaptured, and unless something external changes things, the market should do well into the end of the year.
But it’s too far gone to chase new longs in the near term – the risk/reward just isn’t as favorable as it was a couple weeks ago…or last week. The market needs to rest. It needs to restore all its spent energy. In fact I’d love a mini correction to get the bears excited again…to set the stage for another leg up later in the year. We’ll see. I remain long, but admittingly I’m under-exposed and am hopeful of some decent entries to put more money to work. More after the open.
